  Neckarsulmer Fahrradwerke AG was founded in 1886 to manufacture bicycles but three years later it began supplying parts to the automobile industry. The initials NSU were displayed on the company insignia since 1892.
From 1913 on the company's official name was Neckarsulmer Fahrzeugwerke. In 1905 commenced production of the Belgian Pipe and this was followed by an original model of the NSU.

NSU/Fiat The automobile production was ended in Neckarsulm in 1929. The new factory in Heilbronn was sold to Fiat and licensed production began there in 1930.

    NSU continued motorcycle production and during 1933 and 1934 three prototypes designed by Ferdinand Porsche were built, although no production followed from these projects. Later on these prototypes were further developed into the Volkswagen.
